Boy bands are of all times with many people considering The Beatles as the first boy band ever. Since then, many male vocal groups have been formed and have become famous worldwide.
Simultaneously, the concept of girl band gained popularity with the Spice Girls, TLC and Little Mix as some of the most known examples. Having said that, which boy band do we consider as the biggest boy band in the world? We created a top 5 unforgettable boy band worldwide!
Backstreet Boys
Starting with the ’90, which is a time characterised by the rise of the Backstreet Boys. The group was formed in 1993 with band members AJ McLean, Nick Carter, Brian Littrell, Howie Dorough, and Kevin Richardson. In contrast to most boy bands that became famous worldwide, the band never split up and only had a hiatus of two years. The Backstreet Boys have done eleven tours, won Grammy Awards, and have a discography of ten albums. Although the ‘I Want It That Way’- band is still touring, the band has lost its young audience and worldwide popularity when the band obtained a more mature attitude.
Boyz II Men
Next, we consider Boyz II Men one of the biggest boy bands in the world. We go back in time to 1992, the year that Boyz II Men was founded. In contrast to the choreographed dances of the Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC and BTS, Boyz II Men introduced us to R&B. Their biggest hit was ‘End to the Road’, which dominated the Billboard Hot 100 for weeks and with which they scored a Grammy Award. Just like the Backstreet Boys, Boyz II Men never parted, although only Nathan Morris, Wanyá Morris and Shawn Stockman are still part of the band.
*NSYNC
Perhaps Justin Timberlake is mostly known because of his own music and his acting roles in films, but he owes his success to *NSYNC. The band came together in 1995 and consisted beside Justin Timberlake of Lance Bass, JC Chasez, Chris Kirkpatrick, and Joey Fatone. With only three albums, they scored hits with songs like ‘Bye Bye Bye’ and ‘I Want You Back’. The band also performed at the Super Bowl in 2001, but not long after the band split. Even though their success did not last long, *NSYNC is worldwide known for their music, and they made an important impact on the industry.
One Direction
With the rise of Justin Bieber, boy bands were not as popular as they had been before. However, with the formation of One Direction at the X-factor in 2010, the boy band craze immediately returned. Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik toured four times around the world and recorded four albums together. After Zayn left the band, One Direction released another album but soon after announced a hiatus. Today, mainly Harry Styles is a well-known solo artist, as he won a Grammy Award recently and performed at Coachella. Fans speculate that there will be a reunion, but only time will tell.
BTS
Just like One Direction, BTS was formed in 2010. Nevertheless, they were not successful instantly around the world. Characteristic of BTS is that their music is defined as K-pop, which stands for Korean pop music. Psy was the first one to break through worldwide with his K-pop hit Gangnam Style, but BTS followed in 2018. The songs of Jin, Suga, RM, Jimin, Jungkook and J-Hope hit the charts and together they have done six tours. Now that the band is also on a hiatus, however, we are curious to see which boy band will unfold as the next biggest boy band in the world. Will it be a boy group formed at a show looking for talent or has the next boyband something distinguishingly as BTS?
