As a result of the Coronavirus, which has already affected many people in many countries, most people are forced to work from home. A lot of people have difficulty getting used to this big transition in their work life. If you are not used to working from home, it is a big change, because it requires a different approach than you are used to. The biggest struggle in working from home is: how to stay focused? In this article we give some tips to help you stay focused while working from home.
Music
There are many different opinions about listening to music to improve your focus. Therefore it is important to find out what suits you best. Some people are too distracted by music and therefore work best in complete silence. Of course, this is only possible if you have a space for yourself at home where you can work without others disturbing you.
There are also people who love to listen to music to improve their focus. A reason for this may be that they find silence too isolating or too boring. If you are used to hearing all kinds of sounds around you at work, such as talking colleagues, it can be uncomfortable to suddenly have to work in complete silence. Another reason to listen to music is to improve your mood. After all, music has a big influence on how you feel. In difficult times like these, you can quickly start to feel down a bit. Positive, cheerful and upbeat music can help you to feel better again.
So it is a good idea to just try it out and find out what is best for you. Do you notice that you work best in silence? Then make sure that it can be really quiet at your workplace. If this is not possible, you can invest in noise cancelling headphones. Do you often find music too distracting, but does the silence also drive you crazy? Then try listening to instrumental music. You can do this, for example, via this radio station. Because you do not hear any words, the chance of being distracted is much smaller. Experiment with different music genres to see what works best for you, such as soul, jazz, classical or pop. Another option is to listen to sounds of nature, such as rain, waterfalls, crackling fire or waves of the sea. These are often soothing sounds that help you to focus more.
Structure your day
Something else you can do to increase your focus is to structure your day. In the normal situation, when you go to work, structure arises by itself. You get up at a fixed time. Then you have breakfast and get dressed. Then you go to work and start at a fixed time. Probably the break is also at a fixed time and you also end your working day at a fixed moment. This offers a lot of structure and this structure disappears when you suddenly have to work from home. In order to be able to work as productively as possible, it is useful to organize your homeworking day in the same structured way. Of course you have more freedom while working from home, which is also an advantage, so you can certainly make use of that, but also try to create some structure. Try to get up at the same time every morning and keep fixed working hours. Take breaks like you normally do and go to another room during the break, so you can really distance yourself from your work for a moment. For the work you want to get done in a day you can make a schedule and tick off the tasks when you have completed them.
Dress for success
You might feel tempted to walk around in your pajamas all day, since you do not have to go out and face your colleagues. However, most people tend to feel more productive and focused when they are dressed like they normally would. Some people even wear their shoes inside their house when they are working. Dressing up gives you more energy and also makes it clear to yourself that it is time to start working. In addition, it is also useful to wear normal clothing in case you unexpectedly have to hold a skype meeting for which you have to turn the camera on. This way you do not risk being seen in your pajamas accidentally. Of course, when you have finished working at the end of the day, you can put on some relaxed clothes. This will ensure that you can completely let go of your work at the end of the day and let’s you get into a relaxed mood.
We hope these tips will help you focus better while working from home.
