History
Our journey started back in 2014 when it was founded by University of Chichester Graduate Jamie Dyer.
Before founding the station Jamie had experienced a set of knock backs post graduation, which related to his work prospects, and his career in radio. He was also diagnosed with Autism in 2013, which changed his perspective on life. An experienced radio presenter, Jamie had trained with Tulip FM (Spalding, Lincs) in 2005, before landing a presenting gig at Endeavour Radio (Boston, Lincs) in 2008. Upon moving back to his hometown of Chichester in 2009, Jamie found it difficult to find opportunities in local radio, with some shunning him without a true explanation. In 2010 while still at university, Jamie began broadcasting on a number of online stations, boosting his confidence and experience. By 2014, things were beginning to turn sour as Jamie’s post university job prospects were not working out. “I was told that my college and university education had no worth in the ‘real world’, and that what I knew wasn’t worth anything”, Jamie explains. Jamie set out to prove the doubters wrong, and did some heavy research.
Upon coming up with the idea of SouthWaves Radio, A couple of events were attended, and material was released in podcast form. The positive reaction inspired the idea of opening an online radio station. In December of 2014, a crowdfunding initiative began, and thus the journey took an unexpected turn. A month or two later, the summit of £500 was reached thanks to donations from fans, listeners and the community, and a plan was put into action. In March of 2015, it was opened as an online radio station with an intent to provide a service that is quite scarce in the local area. Since then, we’ve done a whole range of different activities that have helped to boost our profile.
